How do they celebrate Christmas in Poland?

Poland is a Catholic country and church attendances are still very high so when it comes to Christmas then the Poles really go all out to celebrate!

Every Polish home will prepare plenty of dishes on Christmas Eve (known as “Wigilia”)

Just before the evening meal a wafer of holy bread is broken among all the guests and everyone wishes each other a very happy Christmas.

It is possible that hotels and restaurants may honour this tradition but if you would like to take part then you can always request it upon arrival.

It is also traditional to exchange Christmas presents on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas Day.

Many Krakow restaurants will close on Christmas Day but there are still a good number that will be open so you don’t worry about finding somewhere nice to eat.
